Corneal Transplant

Also known as grafts, keratoplasty, or penetrating keratoplasty.

The cornea is the clear curved tissue covering the front of the eye.  If the cornea is damaged, it becomes cloudy resulting is poor vision and even blindness.   A transplant is a surgical procedure that replaces a circular segment of damaged cornea with a donor cornea.  As you can see in our photo, sutures are used to hold the donor cornea in place.  You can also see the white scar tissue where the donor cornea abuts the original cornea.  According to the Eye Bank Association of America, more than 700,000 corneal transplants have been performed since 1961.  Now that’s alot!

Conditions needing corneal transplants:

  • Scaring from infections
  • Keratoconus
  • Congenital disorders
  • Post-LASIK complications

Remember, only an eyecare professional can help you treat and manage corneal transplants.
